Two Overvoltage-Protection Standards Revised

Protecting power systems against overvoltages and voltage surges caused by lighting and switching requires both insulation and surge-protective devices (SPDs). Two standards covering these subjects for low-voltage (1000 V or less) have just been revised.

The first of these, IEEE C62.82.1™, "IEEE Standard for Insulation Coordination - Definitions, Principles, and Rules," establishes procedures for optimizing insulation levels to provide sufficient protection for key equipment at reasonable cost. The standard specifies basic lightning impulse insulation level (BIL) and basic switching impulse insulation level (BSL) for equipment phase-to-ground and phase-to-phase insulation systems.

The second, IEEE C62.62™, "IEEE Standard Test Specifications for Surge-Protective Devices (SPDs) for Use on the Load Side of the Service Equipment in Low-Voltage (1000 V and Less) AC Power Circuits," provide users, independent laboratories and manufacturers with test methods and test specifications applicable to SPDs for limiting transient overvoltages.

The tests are aimed at providing comparisons among the variety of SPDs available. The standard will also help installers and end users to interpret data sheets and compare SPDs more easily.
