The Defense Standard 59-411 and its Relation to EMC

Pete Dorey, a principal EMC consultant at TÜV SÜD Product Service, has recently explained how the European EMC defense standard 59-411 can help attain electromagnetic compatibility for COTS military systems in a post on ElectronicsWeekly.com.

The Defense Standard 59-411 “contains four key steps to assess whether any protection, such as shielding racks and filters, is needed to reduce equipment susceptibility to harsh defense electromagnetic environments and to enhance compatibility with sensitive systems such as military radio,” Dorey said.

Dorey depicted these four key steps in detail. They include defining the electromagnetic environment, evaluating EMC compliance, understanding the functional criticality, and mitigating unacceptable risk.
