Watch Lightning Strike Simulation at Redstone Test Center

Redstone Arsenal's Test Center can create its own lightning to see how it will affect certain military equipment.

Redstone Test Center Electrical Engineer Mark Waller explained, “We are making sure, whether it is ordnance or sensors or ground vehicles or even aviation equipment, […] it is going to operate properly after being in a lightning event.”

The RTC has specialized equipment with the ability to generate up to “200,000 amps and 1,000,000 volts,” reported WAAYTV.com, and the exclusive test facility is “able to conduct these tests on live ordnances or equipment containing live ordinances.”

WAAYTV.com adds that “RTC has actually been specializing in E3 testing since 1965 and has been conducting lightning specific tests since 1981.”
